Health in Mind Website

Helping people access mental health support faster

No. 12247 | Web

The Challenge

A total redesign of Scottish mental health charity Health in Mind’s website.

The Outcome

A more accessible, easy-to-use website designed with community in mind.

A user-friendly space for mental health support

Finding help online for mental health can be a daunting experience. Scottish charity Health in Mind asked us to redesign their website to be more accessible, and to make their mental health and wellbeing services easier to find.

While mental health support and services were the website’s priority, we also wanted to enable users to easily find out how they can get involved with the charity, share their experiences, and see the great work that Health in Mind have been doing. The upgrade needed to be timed to align with the charity’s other digital projects, including an update to their HR portal and service application process.

We began with user research, creating multiple personas for each type of website visitor, such as volunteers, service users, donors and supporters, staff members, and stakeholders. These personas helped us to better understand users’ unique needs, experiences, behaviours and goals. From these, we created user journeys to give an idea of how they’d interact with the website.

Easy to navigate, friendly to read

Based on those user journeys, we rethought the website’s sitemap and created new wireframes, including easy-to-find service pages, a community space, and dedicated areas for volunteering and fundraising information. We then built the website in WordPress, adding new features including a clearer menu, simple forms for community stories and fundraising applications.

We copy edited the website’s content using accessible, direct and everyday language that was in line with Health in Mind’s house style, to allow the charity’s caring, compassionate personality to come through.

We ensured it was easy for Health in Mind’s staff to update the website themselves when needed with a user friendly content management system. This means that each team within the charity can take a proactive approach and make changes to the website without having to go through their marketing team, such as adding a job listing or a charity campaign. There are also spaces for the community to upload inspiring stories, poems and videos, sharing their mental health journeys.
